Locker Storage: Maintenance Tips for Your Steel Locker

Industrial locker units are used in variety of settings, from schools to fire departments to gyms to warehouses. Their robustness makes them a very popular choice for practically anywhere. But, though a locker

cabinet may seem indestructible, they can accumulate a fair share of wear and tear if they are not properly maintained.

In the interest of having your new metal locker last a long, long time, we have a few maintenance tips that you might find very handy.

How to Look after Your Industrial Locker

In order to ensure that you get the longest life possible out of your steel locker units, consider the following:

1. Frequent Cleaning

If your locker storage is in an industrial setting, cleaning might seem like a never-ending task. But, the cleaner you keep your locker cabinet, the better your chances of keeping it in good trim. So, once a month, give your big or small locker a wipe down with a clean, wet cloth. This will ensure that it stays free of grime and other build-up that could shorten its life.

Then, three or four times a year, clean the locker with a wax-based polish. This will coat the paint and keep humidity and air pollutants from breaking it down. Be sure not to use abrasive cleaners on the locker, however, as these could strip the paint that you want to protect.

2. Treating Scratches

If your metal locker gets scratched, don’t just leave the scratch. If untreated, exposed metal will begin to rust, especially in humid environments. So, as soon as you notice the scratch, sand down the area and apply some touch-up paint.

3. Maintaining Hinges

In order to keep the hinges swinging smoothly you need to add some lubricant from time to time. Oil or silicone spray is perfect for this task.

You might have to apply this more frequently in certain conditions, which you will discover over time. But, to start with, you could do this quarterly after you polish your locker.

The best way to ensure proper maintenance is to start when your locker is brand new. So, if you have a few old lockers that are barely hanging on, why not replace them? This way, you can be sure that your maintenance will have the best possible effect.
