1965 – the year of beginnings and momentous occasions. You might be wondering what happened in 1965 that makes it so special. Well, for starters, Krost Shelving and Racking was born! And considering how many lives our company has touched, that’s a reason to celebrate!
This year marks our 50th anniversary, so we thought we’d share some rich history with you. Let’s take a step back in time and find out what was going on in the year of our birth!
Malcolm X was assassinated in New York City on 21 February. He was a well-known human rights activist.
On March 8th, the first American combat troops arrived in South Vietnam. Around 3500 marines were, essentially, the start of the Vietnam War. By the end of the year, there would be 190 000 American soldiers there.
Charlie Brown and other world-famous Peanuts cartoon characters first appeared on the cover of Time Magazine on 9th April, forever marking it as one of the most popular cartoons in history.
A tournament never before seen was held – the first skateboard championship. The first woman winner was Patti McGee and the first male winner was Danny Bearer.
One of the most famous pop songs of all time – I Got You Babe – was released by Sonny & Cher.
Perhaps the most remarkable thing that happened in this year was The Beatles played the first ever stadium rock concert. They played to 55 600 people at Shea Stadium in New York City.

The first 12-bit PDP-8 commercial minicomputer is made available. It was released by Digital Equipment Corporation. Not long after this, Gordon Moore, the co-founder of Intel, explained what is now known as Moore’s Law.
Richard Feynman won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on quantum electrodynamics.

Rhodes University, always known for being progressive, became the first university in South Africa to install a computer.
The ANC established headquarters in Morogoro in Tanzania.
And of course, 1965 was the year when we began to manufacture shelving, racking, lockers and mezzanine floors in Johannesburg, growing to a business that now delivers to several southern African countries.
